Liverpool v Benfica (Weds)
Although they’re trailing by one goal on aggregate, Sporting
Index have priced Liverpool up as favourites to end Benfica’s
European dream. They were totally outplayed by the Reds in the first
half in Portugal, and got a lucky goal late in the match when Liverpool
relaxed a bit too much. Expect a defensive approach from both teams,
as the visitors try and protect their lead and Liverpool seek to
avoid gifting them an away goal. This one may even run in to extra
time if Liverpool can’t get an early lead. Either way, there’s
a good chance of a few bookings if the visitors get desperate later
in the game.
Arsenal v Real Madrid (Weds)
All season, although Arsenal have been much stronger at home than
on the road, their domestic form has been weak. Despite this, they
are still the bookies’ favourite to knock Real Madrid out.
The messy behind-the-scenes activity at the Bernabeu seems to be
affecting the players, some of whom just don’t look interested
any more and are underperforming. There’s a danger of this
match descending in to a bit of a scrap as players fight to stay
in the competition. Sporting Index predict a tight home win, but
a lot depends on another good performance from Henry.
Barcelona v Chelsea (Tues)
Considering the result after the first leg, it’s difficult to see Chelsea progressing to the next round from this match without a bit of luck. Sporting Index expect to see goals from both sides, but have priced up the home team as favourites to win this leg too. The tensions off the pitch are likely to carry over in to the match, so expect more theatricals and a few fireworks. Whatever happens, one very big team will be dropping out of the competition so the ref is set for a busy night and Sporting anticipate plenty of bookings.
Villareal v Rangers (Tues)
Villareal played really well in the first leg, and could have done enough already to ensure they progress, thanks to their two away goals. Prso’s absence is a big blow for the visitors, who will probably try to nab an early goal from a set play and defend for the rest of the match. However, Villareal bossed things at Ibrox and are likely to have a lot of possession at home. Like Chelsea, the Gers will need to rely on a bit of luck and a poor performance from the home team if they are to have any real hope of making the last eight.
